As data is likened to the "oil" of the digital economy, data security is becoming a mandatory requirement for businesses. In Vietnam, effective January 2026, the Personal Data Protection Law officially applies, establishing a strict legal framework while also posing significant compliance challenges for enterprises.

Under the regulations, personal data violations can be fined up to 5% of the previous year's revenue, along with enormous compensation amounts — and more seriously — the risk of criminal prosecution. This creates significant pressure for FDI enterprises, especially Japanese companies with high volumes of valuable data.

Meanwhile, cybersecurity risks continue to escalate. During 2023–2025, over 160 million data records were compromised in Vietnam, forcing enterprises to face a dual pressure: complying with legal requirements while enhancing data protection capabilities.
